The photo of the 3 boys was an old photograph of the author's father and two uncles from Italy. I asked the publisher if there was any other information I could work with—I wanted to create a story! A copy of the father's birth certificate was sent. I started by changing the three-boy-photo into a sepia tone. Next, for the background I combined the birth certificate with a scanned piece of handmade paper and combined it with a scan of flower-paper.
